Should I see a coach, doctor or psychologist?

Seeking support for your mental and emotional health takes courage.

When you’re feeling vulnerable and unclear about exactly what’s going on for you, it can be hard to know who to reach out to first.

The first thing to remember is that it’s ok to try a few different mental health professionals to see what fits. For many, a traditional path of mental health care that involves visits to a GP, followed by referrals to a psychologist and, in some cases, a psychiatrist will be right one. For others, additional or alternative care may be what’s needed.

Here are a few guidelines that may help make the process of seeking support a little clearer:

When to contact a doctor or psychologist

If you're grappling with debilitating physical, emotional, or mental symptoms significantly impacting your life, seeking medical support is crucial.

A diagnosis and support in managing a mental health condition provide a foundational step toward healing. Once your condition is effectively managed, a coach or counsellor can help you reach higher goals for thriving.

When to work with a coach

  • When your baseline mental and physical health is sound, and you're ready to work on specific goals

  • If accountability is important in progressing toward your goals

  • To identify and overcome obstacles hindering goal achievement, such as problematic behaviors and habits

  • When you seek more self-awareness and a stronger connection to your intuition

  • For a confidential, safe space to talk and heal

  • If you need an objective perspective and fresh ideas

  • When you're ready to explore and elevate specific life areas, such as finances, relationships, parenting, or career

  • When you are already working with a doctor or psychologist and would like additional support

The difference between a coach and a psychologist

  • Coaches aren't health care professionals but can effectively work with those experiencing diagnosed mental health conditions

  • Coaching is solution-focused, action-based and results-oriented, not diagnostic

  • Psychologists often focus on the 'why' behind behaviors, while coaches focus on the 'how' to become aware of and move beyond them

In seeking mental health support, the professional's title matters less than their interpersonal skills and how emotionally safe you feel with them.

Look for someone -whether they be a doctor, coach or psychologist - who is genuinely on your team, and who values showing up as compassionate, empathetic, kind, confidential, and a good listener.

You deserve nothing less.
