The role of emotions + thoughts in physical healing
A few years ago, I would not have written an article on the emotional and mental components of healing physical illnesses.
But now that science has caught up with what spiritual practitioners and healers have been doing for millennia, I feel braver. Stories of spontaneous healing are becoming commonplace - even mainstream - and many doctors are beginning to accept that there is more to healing than what can be seen with the eye.
Imagine what could be possible if we combined the advances of conventional medicine with a thorough knowledge of the role thoughts and emotions play in creating and healing from disease?
“It is a scientific fact that the hormones of stress downregulate genes and create disease -long-term effects. Human beings because of the size of their neocortex, can turn on the stress response just with thought alone. We can think about our problems and then turn on these chemicals.
That means our thoughts could make us sick. So, if it’s possible for our thoughts to make us sick, is it possible that our thoughts could make us well? And the answer is, absolutely yes!”

There are many ways to address the emotional aspects of an illness, including meditation, breathwork, journaling and….NLP.
I use specific NLP techniques because they allow me to quickly identify the emotional discord that lies at the root of the physical symptom and to heal the emotion at a deep level. By doing this (and nurturing myself intuitively), I’ve witnessed:
- A sun cancer clear up in 24 hours
- A cold disappear overnight
- A neck ache completely dissolve
- My periods normalise and period pain completely disappear
Understanding the relationship between emotions, thoughts and physical symptoms
Imagine you’re sitting down, enjoying a quiet cuppa when you hear a light knock at the door. You sigh and ignore it.
The next day, you hear the knock at the door again, and this time it’s louder. Feeling a little fearful, you ignore it again.
The messenger at the door returns day after day, each time knocking louder and louder, until finally, stressed and exasperated, you let it in. The messenger sits down at your table, you reluctantly offer it a cuppa and finally allow it to talk. It delivers its message, which turns out to be something incredibly helpful, and then leaves, promising to return if it has a message to deliver. You feel inexplicably better.
Your body is the messenger. And illness is the way it is delivering a message that it really needs you to hear.
NLP techniques are used to communicate with the messenger at an unconscious level, allowing you to retrieve the message and bring it back to the light of consciousness.
When your body knows that you have received the message, its work is done. And that is often when healing occurs.
The physical symptom is no longer needed.
I had an aggressive sun cancer cut out of my arm a couple of years ago and was told that I would have more. Sure enough, an angry sore popped up on my leg one day and I used NLP on it. Not only did the sun cancer disappear the following week, but I also learned something important. The sun cancer was there, like most of my ailments, to tell me to rest at a time when it felt like I was beating myself up trying to be a success and do it all. So, I listened and rested while it felt like the whole world was screaming at me to stay busy.
Interestingly, I recently had another sun cancer pop up and this time, I didn’t do the work of listening, telling myself I was too busy. I ended up having to have it cut out.
This experience was an important message that had me diving deep to ask: what is it that drives me to deny myself a 10-minute healing technique? I’ll remember this next time!
Do you have any physical symptoms that are knocking on your door, begging to be heard?
