How to thrive as an introvert in an extroverted world
You’re an introvert who is dying inside because it’s school holidays or your partner is on holidays and you haven’t had a minute to yourself.
For the first little while you stayed afloat and thought you were killing it at this extraverted thing, you didn’t need to journal or meditate or go for solo walks. And….then you crash.
How to handle being an introvert in an extroverted world
I’ve tried all the things for un-introverting myself because, let’s face it, being an introvert in a busy talkative world is challenging. But it never works. For me, solitude is a hunger that devours me if I don’t listen to it. It sends me crazy and I end up being a hideous person to be around when I blame my resentment on others instead of accepting who I am.
Over the years, I’ve developed a few ways of surviving extraverted times with my sanity and relationships intact. Here they are:
Journal first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Journalling for introverts and empaths is so powerful for separating your thoughts and emotions from others and regaining a sense of power and clarity
Lean into quiet times. Don’t try to fill 5 minutes of silence with noise or scrolling – bathe in it for the gift it is
Explain your introversion and how it works to others. Do this without minimising yourself for being this way or blaming them for being extraverted, eg, “I really am a much nicer person when I’ve had 30 minutes to journal or go for a walk myself. I love you and I love spending time with you but this is how I get my energy back.”
It’s ok to be an introvert in what seems to be an extraverted world - the extroverts in our lives need our gentle strength and reflective superpowers!
Find the strengths embedded in your introversion. Stay in your lane. Life begins to flow when you stop seeing introversion as a weakness and lean into its strength.
Make a list of why it’s great to be your introverted self (remember the extraverts in your life still love you!) and start prioritising practices that help you to recharge your energy during busy, peopled times.
Life flows when we work with our natural energy levels and authentic values.
